Migrant Hostel

This simile illustrates the migrators as birds searching for their home, gaining more or less respite in others of the same nationality. However, the “circling” is symbolic of their inability to swot up their home due to the uncertain nature of the hostel. The constant grammatical case and uncertainty is in fact circular and therefore has a stagnating effect on the search for blend ining of these migrators. Accordingly, this portrays a reject disaffection experienced by the migrants in which no talk over is felt. In Stanza three, Skrzynecki reiterates the bird simile, however this time comparing the migrant experience to that of “birds of passage” . The migratory nature of these birds is instead different to the “homing pigeon”, conveying a transitory nature of their criminal maintenance as what birds of passage do. By doing this, Skrzynecki reintroduces an atmosphere of uncertainty along with the suggestion, “We lived like birds of passage-, Always sensing a change, In the condense”. The use of the collective first person pronoun “we”, helps depict the wholeness amongst the migrants, giving an indication that the migrants ar not certain of where they belong anymore. “For over two years” of unpredictable and inconsequential living, they are looking for a new place to belong to, quite the new landscape where they have come to, conveying their hopelessness to conform to a society and leave hallucination.
